We live in challenging, complex times. Sometimes we may need help and support to cope with life’s difficulties, working with an experienced  professional can really help.

I draw upon a range of psychological theories to support your needs. I use a Trauma-Informed approach,  which can help us to identify self destructive patterns, let go of past hurts and find more positive ways of coping and being. Our bodies contain all of our lives experience, and it can be difficult to put painful experiences or memories into words, so in addition to talking, I also use a range of non-verbal and creative processes to support clients towards meaningful change.

I may encourage you to use techniques of mindfulness, embodiment, movement, music, image making, narrative, counselling and metaphor in addition to talking.  Working in this way helps to integrate the whole self.

I always use a person-centred approach, meaning I work with warmth, empathy and compassion putting you at the centre of the sessions and work at a pace that feels comfortable for you. I provide a safe and confidential space for you to explore and work through your issues.  I offer in person sessions (South Yorkshire) and also offer sessions online via Zoom or Skype.

I passionately believe in each person’s  capacity onto overcome adversity. Life can feel overwhelming and sometimes exhausting. My focus as a therapist is to support you to find clarity, to understand yourself more deeply and build greater resilience towards achieving your goals. Whether you feel you need counselling, psychotherapy, or coaching I provide a supportive, safe space to explore emotional and psychological issues.  Together we can take the first steps to a happier, healthier you!

I offer one to one therapy sessions as well as group therapy, and individual & group therapy for trainees. I am an experienced facilitator and am a visiting lecturer at the University of Derby.

What happens in a session?

I offer an initial free video consultation so that we can get a sense of each other, and discuss what your needs are.  Following on from this in our first session we will discuss what you want to get out of therapy.  Initially it’s useful to have weekly sessions, but this can vary.

A session will start with a verbal check-in. A chance for you to say how your week has been and talk about any issues that have come up for you. We would then spend some time exploring your issues - some clients may want to do this by talking.  It can be useful to use mindfulness (being in the present moment) through movement or image making, which is an opportunity to look from a different perspective.  I will invite you to develop and explore in a multi-faceted way, which helps clients to gain insight. Each session ends with a verbal ending process so you can have a chance to talk about what we have explored in sessions, and anything that arises from that, giving a closing to the session so you feel grounded and able to go back to everyday life.

Depending on your needs, ongoing sessions can be a combination of talking and creative processes, but working in a person centred way means we work in a way that is best for you, and puts you at ease.

Making small changes to self-defeating behaviour and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, pain and loss can bring life changing results.

Martha Graham

“There is a vitality, a life-force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and it will be lost.  The world will not have it.  It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it clearly yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open”.

Group therapy can be a valuable and cathartic experience. It brings people together to listen and learn from others in a therapeutic environment, it can reduce the impact of isolation or loneliness, giving the reassurance that we are not alone in our suffering or difficulties.
Group therapy can work well within organisations in which employees experience high levels of stress as a part of the work environment. Group therapy is available by arrangement.  Get in touch for more information or to book an appointment.
